The Journey of Gold Know More. Source Responsibly. help stop the Flow of Illegal Gold. Social Media Toolkit: Summer 2018

Every day you may hold a piece of the Congo in the palm of your hand. Not just used in banking and jewelry, gold can be found in many consumer and industrial products, including cell phones, health care equipment and even airplanes. But have you ever stopped to ask where it comes from? How it's bought and sold? Or who are the people behind the product?

To learn more, we invite you to join us in “The Journey of Gold”, a Virtual Reality experience exploring Nyamurhale, an artisanal gold mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Experience how artisanal gold is produced, and meet the miners and cooperative leaders who are working to produce legal, safe, and conflict-free gold-- compliant with international standards and guidance.

Learn More

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 95% of artisanal gold is mined illegally and smuggled out of the country. This flow of illegal gold contributes to the ongoing conflict in DRC, and results in the loss of millions of dollars of legal tax revenue annually for the government. Learn more in this great video from the Enough Project on Conflict Minerals 101.

At Nyamurhale, the USAID-funded Capacity Building for Responsible Minerals Trade (CBRMT) project, in partnership with the Responsible Artisanal Gold Solutions Forum, is working to pilot one of the first conflict free artisanal gold supply chains from the DRC. Learn about the due diligence and traceability systems that are being piloted at Nyamurhale to ensure gold is responsibly sourced and conflict free. And read about technical assistance used to improve gold recovery and ensure the mine site stays mercury free.

Find out more about other pilot projects working to bring responsible gold from the DRC into in the products you use every day.

Take Action

By buying and sourcing conflict-free artisanal gold from the Congo, you can make a real difference in people's lives and help build prosperous communities and sustainable livelihoods. Consumers should ask the companies they purchase from to include conflict-free gold from Congo in their products. Investors should ask companies in their portfolios to disclose relevant information about the sourcing and due diligence conducted on their gold supply chains.
